Qatar University Professor Delivers a Keynote Speech at Vienna Summit on RO Desalination in Qatar

Prof. Syed Javaid Zaidi, QAFAC Chair professor at the Center for Advanced Materials, Qatar University recently delivered a keynote lecture on Reverse osmosis (RO) desalination in Qatar at the 3rd International Conference on Materials Science and Materials Chemistry, held in Vienna, Austria. The theme of the conference was "Universal Forum and Forecast on Innovations in Advanced Materials and Technologies".

Prof. Zaidi delivered the presentation entitled “Nanocomposite Membrane Technology for Reverse Osmosis Desalination”, which was well received by the international audience. He presented the innovative work on the membrane technology development going on at the Center for Advanced Materials at Qatar University for reverse osmosis water desalination in Qatar.

Prof. Zaidi noted that Seawater Desalination is strategically important to the State of Qatar. Water stress is rising due to rapidly growing demands from population growth, industrialization, urbanization and agriculture. Qatar Nation Vision 2030 identified water as one of the Grand Challenges of Qatar. The scarcity of renewable water resources and the escalating competition for water is a major challenge in the sustainable development agenda for Qatar. Innovative desalination technologies that minimize both cost of water production and the environmental impact should be further investigated

Water scarcity will be one of the defining features of the 21st century. By 2050, 1 in 5 developing countries will face water shortages. In Qatar, until now the major water desalination technology was thermal based MSF process. From 2016 there is a shift to membrane based reverse osmosis (RO) technology due environmental and economic benefits as RO technology consumes less energy than thermal based MSF process and can be adopted to local seawater quality. In order for desalination to live up to the water challenges of the 21st century, a step-change is needed in RO membrane technology. The development of RO membranes has tremendous room for improvement and it is of utmost importance to translate the exciting outcomes from lab scale to the practical industry scale. Membrane technology will play a major role for the reverse osmosis system development for water desalination. The membrane technology has gained an important place in solving the challenging issues of water, energy and environment. It has progressed rapidly and made tremendous achievements in recent years. It has brought great benefits to human life and created numerous industrial applications. In the future, the huge potential membrane market requires new breakthroughs of developing cost-effective and environmental-friendly membranes and membrane processes by establishing collaboration with the various research organizations. A memento was also presented to Prof. Zaidi as a token of appreciation for his keynote talk. He proposed an integrated approach for commercialization by adoption of positive industrial attitude towards integrated research and development and establishment of long-term roadmap.

Prof. Zaidi have been invited based on his international recognition in the membrane technology for water treatment and clean energy. The conference organizers noted that Prof. Zaidi’s research works have left a great imprint in this arena, where they would like to use this event to bring the spotlight on his achievements.
