Supplemental Instruction (SI)
Launched in Spring 2011 at Qatar University by the former Academic Support Unit – SLSC. SI is a recognized and highly respected academic support program available worldwide in institutions of higher education.
What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that utilizes peer-assisted study sessions. SI sessions are regularly-scheduled, informal review sessions in which students compare notes, discuss readings and develop organizational tools. Students learn how to integrate course content and study skills while working together. The sessions are facilitated by "SI leaders", students who have previously done well in the course and who attend all class lectures, take notes, and act as model students.
How students benefit?
- SI increases academic performance.
- Provides clarification of concepts.
- Improves study skills.
- Creates group learning environment.
- Helps in exam preparation.
- Provides convenient sessions timings.
- Involves knowledgeable student instructors.
What does it cost?
SI sessions are free. Students are encouraged to come as often as they like, however, the statistics show that the more students attend and participate, the better their grades will improve.
