Water Technology Unit
The Center for Advanced Materials at Qatar University established a Water technology Unit (WTU) in collaboration with Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC). WTU will gradually become the full fledge center to cater the local industry and community and become the center of excellence in desalination and water treatment in the region.
The Water Technology Unit established at CAM-QU will be a strategic industrial research niche that addresses current and emerging issues relating to water quality and scarcity. Central to this is the use of conventional and innovative technologies that will help provide technical support to the water desalination and treatment industry in Qatar to ensure that desalinated, treated or handled water in Qatar meets the global standard levels suitable for the targeted purposes, which will be achieved by using state-of-the-art equipment and technologies. Furthermore, the WTU will establish a multi-disciplinary research program covering the main areas of water desalination and treatment, which include, but not limited to, membrane fabrication and fouling control, pretreatment, brine management, and troubleshooting. The research program of the WTU aligns with the research priorities of Qatar University and coincides with the strategic goals of the National Vision 2030, which targets the expansion of the desalination capacity of the state of Qatar and strengthening the national desalination technical and expertise capacity.
WTU will attract expertise from researchers with diverse experiences and international collaboration. The unit will also be at the forefront of integrating nanotechnologies with existing water treatment practices with the goal of optimizing the efficiency of conventional water desalination and treatment technologies in addition to the development of new nanotechnology enhanced membranes, materials and processes.
The mission of WTU is to ensure the compliance of global standards for all types of drinking water produced or treated inside Qatar, offer technical expertise to support water-treatment industries and to train and educate students to become the next generation experts in the field of water treatment technology. WTU vision is to become a premier research center in five years for desalination and water treatment research in Qatar and the region through state-of-the-art technology development and training programs and a leading provider of water technology solutions for the local desalination industry.
The goal of WTU is to build its capacity and develop local expertise to support the water desalination and treatment industry in Qatar. Eventually, the WTU will meet the national demand for water security in Qatar by ensuring high water quality, sufficient water quantity, and no disaster in water resources in Qatar. Most of all, WTU will focus on ensuring water security by performing water research activities.
The WTU will play a major role in developing various water technologies to secure water resources and improve water quality in the next five years. Here, the WTU meets its goals and mission in stages within five years.
